Infrastructure for a modern and flexible office concept

Project: Swiss Re Next headquarters and new Swiss Re office in Bangalore, 2017
Application: Multifunctional LAN for team workplaces, agile working, mobility, video and smart building

The workplace of the future at Lake Zurich and in Bangalore
Your quality of life is already high if you work overlooking Lake Zurich. But Swiss reinsurer Swiss Re has made an additional quantum leap for its employees. A new glass office complex is a pioneering example of the working world of the future: Swiss Re Next.

The company implemented the agile working concept on Lake Zurich – and also in the new Indian branch in Bangalore. It does away with the traditional rigid structures of office activity and makes it mobile. The insurance and financial experts enjoy new opportunities to be even more productive with the help of digitalization.

Challenge
The next generation workplace at Swiss Re required a multifunctional infrastructure. Performance headroom had to be included in the equation for mobile working, data and video transmission. Above all, the customer required full WLAN coverage. In addition, enough power and data connections should be available at each desk.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) was to be used to supply power to WLAN antennas, end devices and controllers. Numerous technical connections and separate cabling had to be integrated for security systems, access control and building automation.

Solution “The project went off smoothly implementing almost exclusively standard solutions from R&M for the structured cabling of office buildings,” says Thomas Läderach,

project lead at installation partner AZ Elektro AG. The project partners chose the proven combination of fiber optic backbone (OM4/OS2 cable) and horizontal copper cabling (Cat. 7A S/FTP AWG 22) to connect 5,500 ports (Cat. 6A EL modules).

The connection solution for the docking stations at the individual workstations had to be as slimline as possible and fit in the raceways in the desks. But the connectors also had to be easy to operate. R&M quickly developed a customized compact desk distributor strip (DDS) outlet with six power and four LAN connectors and delivered 600 of them.

Result
With the cabling system from R&M, Swiss Re has a stable, future-proof and economical infrastructure for the digital workplace. Agile and mobile working succeeds without obstacles.

The solution for the cabling of the digital workplace was also able to be implemented smoothly in India. R&M India convinced the customer that this was the right solution because all requirements could be met locally in exactly the same way as they would have been in Switzerland.
