How CKW AG Implemented the Meticulous Plan with the Help of R&M
Customer: Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (CKW), Switzerland
Project: New-build commercial data center for connectivity and IT infrastructure, 2015-2017
Application: Top of rack cabling, Cat. 6A copper cabling, OM4 FO cabling with MPO/MTP and interchangeable LC Duplex trays.
Due to strong growth, the Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (CKW) decided to build a new data center in 2015. An ISO 27001-certified Tier IV data center was to be created in Lucerne-Littau. With a usable space of 1,270m2 it was to be the largest commercial data center in Central Switzerland. Private and public customers can rent a white space, rack lounges and rack space from CKW.
As the timetable was very ambitious from the outset, the planners drafted exact deadlines with precisely defined interfaces. Walter Epp, system engineer and the man responsible for data center operations, says: “As project lead I have a large number of tasks that all have to be taken care of at the same time. And that is why I need an expert and transparent advisor in the cabling sector too, a partner I can totally rely on at all times.”
Walter Epp also stresses that communication in such a complex project is of crucial significance. Adhering to the precisely defined delivery times was also very important as installation work in projects of this magnitude quickly explodes in terms of costs when delays occur.
Walter Epp found the partner he was looking for in R&M. The R&M team supported CKW throughout the project with logistics, consulting and planning services, and stood out with perfect delivery quality. “Everything was delivered as planned and on time,” says a highly satisfied project lead Walter Epp. “The customer advisors were always available for me whenever I had any questions. And during the installation phase, they were even often to be found on site,” says Walter Epp whose meticulous planning ended up working perfectly.
Furthermore, R&M fulfilled a range of specific requirements. For example, R&M delivered all patch cords at the right lengths with precise instructions on how to position them in the racks. The installation team was trained in specifics on site by R&M – an important factor when it comes to quality assurance.
In the spring of 2017, CKW was able to commission a data center which worked perfectly. “Every connection worked smoothly from the word go, at full performance,” confirms Walter Epp. The infrastructure is based on top of rack cabling with OM4 fibers, MPO/MTP connections and interchangeable LC Duplex trays as well as Cat. 6A copper cabling.
The importance of the Layer-1 infrastructure is often underestimated. With R&M I have a partner that gives me optimal support and offers me the right solutions for this sector.
