Sophisticated Network Structure with Wire Center

Leading Swiss telecommunications enterprise Swisscom was planning a new data center in Bern-Wankdorf, initially for 5000 servers over 4000 m2. The servers host complex applications such as the e-banking facilities of dozens of banks and cloud services.
The data center was to set new standards in terms of performance, security, availability, green IT and energy efficiency. The high-density infrastructure was to support the desired operational reliability and efficiency and at the same time be open for all kinds of server types and upcoming changes of generation. Special network standards defined by Swisscom were to be implemented.
The network structure is based on the IT know-how of Swisscom and the following concepts:
- Hybrid Delivery Bus (HDB), effectively a full-mesh topology in the core
- Tree topology in the access layer
- Access switches in the central wire center (instead of top of rack or end of row). This means every rack can be connected centrally and every network made available everywhere.
This centralized solution requires a high proportion of copper in cabling. And indeed R&M provided the equipment for 11 500 links with 23 000 Cat. 6A modules as well as around 280 kilometers of Cat. 7A AWG 22 copper data cable.
Swisscom chose the R&M high-density solution with the 48-port HD Panel because the company felt it was the most compact solution around. Furthermore, standard compliance, quality and the experience from other projects were all factors Swisscom considered important. R&M also quickly developed individual numbering for the module holders.
Swisscom has been operating one of the most exemplary data centers in Europe in Bern-Wankdorf since September 2014. It was the first data center in Switzerland to be awarded Tier IV certification from the Uptime Institute for maximum failure safety. With a PUE value of 1.2, it is also top of the class when it comes to energy efficiency. This grading earned the data center the Watt d’Or Award from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, BFE.
The installation provided by the specialists from swisspro NW AG was perfect and error-free from the word go. Perfect signal transmission was demonstrated both on the long and short copper links between the wire center and the server racks.
