Network Planning for the Internet of Things

In 2022 there will be 14 billion devices connected with data networks worldwide – more than
twice as many as today in 2015. And because each of these devices will have its own IP address, people are talking about the Internet of Things, IoT. Then you have billions of smartphones, tablets and computers which are virtually permanently online. This leads to hyperconnectivity, to a digital revolution and a whole range of new market opportunities.

In the focus article of its specialist magazine CONNECTIONS No. 48, R&M reports on background and analyses on these trends. The major challenge here is creating appropriate infrastructures.

A profoundly networked world can only work with reliable infrastructure. Based on decades of experience, R&M has extracted the factors which actors should take into consideration:

  • he wired infrastructure should be promoted as far as possible. FO networks offer the most perspectives. Wired networks have to be planned and prepared to offer optimal radio coverage.
  • Standardization of the infrastructures should be universal as the infrastructures have to include older generations of network technology. Ethernet, TCP/IP and RJ45 are solutions which will continue to be in use for a long time. Even the various DSL and PON generations will continue to exist in parallel for some time yet and should be supported.
  • Distribution platforms should be able to be adjusted to suit new situations in just a few easy steps. They should also be easy to scale. Network operators should only procure and install what is likely to be successful on the market and enable growth.
  • The cabling and connectivity technology should be designed to be self-explanatory and repair-friendly.
  • High product quality, faultless installation, permanent availability and loss-free signal transmission reduce the operating and maintenance costs of the networks.
  • The networks are being set up for coming generations and therefore have to be designed to stand the test of time.

Planners, installers and operators of public and private networks can focus on five important spheres of activity which R&M has identified. Major changes and market opportunities are to be expected here:

  • Broadband coverage of the area and ubiquitous digital intelligence
  • Communication between machines
  • Mobile and wired communication in mega cities
  • Convergence of networks in interactive working world

Data traffic in the Internet of Things can grow to 4 million terabytes in 2022 according to forecasts by Machina Research and Bosch. Most data will be generated by applications in smart cities.
