Merging of the real and the digital world
Digitalization is advancing inexorably. Tiny computers, actuators and sensors (embedded systems) can be accommodated in virtually every object in the physical world and be connected to the Internet using an IP address. This is how cyber physical systems, the Internet of Things (IoT) and ultimately smart networks come into being.

In the process, large quantities of information end up in the cloud. Gradually a comprehensive digital image of the real world is pieced together there. Copies of objects, items and processes are created in the data centers in bits and bytes.

The data networks also acquire and process their current status and the environment impacting on them. The real and the digital world merge. This trend is opening up opportunities for new business models.

Monitoring cabling too
Complete and powerful networking is a decisive criterion for the successful application of the Internet of Things and the efficient use of digital images. If there is not sufficient cabling in the background, antennas, sensors, controls and servers simply cannot communicate. Smart networks require reliable infrastructures.

This means that comprehensive real-time information has to be collected about the cabling, too. What use is top-layer monitoring of the network if a network connector has been pulled out or plugged in incorrectly without anybody noticing?

Taking interfaces for smart networks into consideration
Findings by R&M have shown that interfaces between the physical and digital world have to be planned in a differentiated manner to be able to establish a functioning digital image at all. From one project to the next, there are different requirements and solutions for the sensor networks and connection technique. Media discontinuities should be avoided. The digital chain and the interoperability have to be designed continuously.
